  REVIEW:

Nancy Drew, the legendary teenage queen of “sleuthing” . . . and, no, we don’t know what that means either.

The movie Nancy Drew is based on the classic children’s book series that began in the 1930’s.  Now years later, Emma Roberts plays Nancy Drew on the big screen.  She’s a teenage mystery solver known for fighting crime in her hometown.  When her father is transferred to L.A. for a few months, he make her promise to lay off the sleuthing for a while.  She tries, but finds herself right in the middle of the mystery of the woman that used to live in the house before them who mysteriously dies and her baby disappeared.  At first, the kids at her school think she’s strange, but eventually she makes friends who help her follow the clues to solve the mystery.  She has to solve the mystery before her father finds out what she’s doing or before the bad guys successfully try to kill her.

It may not be the best acting performance ever, but Emma Roberts is so sweet and adorable, it’s hard not to like her as Nancy Drew.  And, it’s hard not to like her character – Nancy Drew is an oddball and outcast, but she’s sure of herself and passionate about her unusual hobby.  Other characters in the movie seem too silly, though.  Nancy Drew mysteries are supposed to be serious, suspenseful, and thrilling . . . not goofy.  And, it's really a bit of a weird story - especially for a kid's movie.  There's actually not much of a mystery to be solved, and there's nothing very clever in how Nancy goes about solving it.  Young girls will love the movie because they’ll love her, but everyone else will find the appeal very elusive.

  MOVIE NIGHT TRAFFIC LIGHT:

On the Movie Night Traffic Light on a scale of GREEN meaning “Go – it’s a must see”, YELLOW meaning “Caution – it’s okay” and RED meaning “No - stop don’t do it."

We rate Nancy Drew YELLOW.  Caution – this will appeal to mostly just young girls.
